Piece of the week: Serenade for Strings

Ok, I am guilty for not posting my POW and I am sorry. I have been MIA from my rehearsal for nearly a month and a half and I don't have any new pieces to share. But last Friday I went to my practice and I fell in love with this short but sweet piece. It is by Mozart, enjoy. :)

I am alone...and sick

I think I have a cold. *Sniff sniff* I am here with my kitties (since my parents, sisters and brother are away, visiting my grandparents) I am here alone. Plus being sick, sucks. :( Altho my retail therapy today was ok...bought something for my mum's birthday (belated birthday present :P) and I feel kinda good.

My eyes itches, my nose hurts like I have been swimming for awhile..and the worst part, theres no one to pamper me...why does CLK have to be far away? :( I mish you.

p.s. I am looking for a long hooded cardi...I have found options and am thinking of buying...so happy (in sickness).

Oll korrect!

OK! :D Something interesting I read tonight. Have you ever wonder what OK stands for? It's spelled so many ways (that I use anyway :D): OK, o.k., okay, wokeh. I didn't think any of it till I read this interesting answer on Yahoo! Answers.

1839, only survivor of a slang fad in Boston and New York c.1838-9 for abbreviations of common phrases with deliberate, jocular misspellings (cf. K.G. for "no go," as if spelled "know go"); in this case, "oll korrect." Further popularized by use as an election slogan by the O.K. Club, New York boosters of Democratic president Martin Van Buren's 1840 re-election bid, in allusion to his nickname Old Kinderhook, from his birth in the N.Y. village of Kinderhook. Van Buren lost, the word stuck, in part because it filled a need for a quick way to write an approval on a document, bill, etc. The noun is first attested 1841; the verb 1888. Spelled out as okeh, 1919, by Woodrow Wilson, on assumption that it represented Choctaw okeh "it is so" (a theory which lacks historical documentation); this was ousted quickly by okay after the appearance of that form in 1929. Okey-doke is student slang first attested 1932. Greek immigrants to America who returned home early 20c. having picked up U.S. speech mannerisms were known in Greece as okay-boys, among other things.

H.L. Mencken once described "O.K." as "the most successful of Americanisms," an estimation verified by U.S. troops during the Second World War, who reported encountering the phrase all over the world. Of all the scores of theories (and sub-theories) as to the origin of "O.K.," the most widely heard traces "O.K." to the "O.K. Club," a political committee supporting Martin Van Buren's unsuccessful bid for the Presidency in 1840. The "O.K.," it is said, was short for "Old Kinderhook," Van Buren's nickname.

It appears that this theory is not so much wrong (the "O.K. Club" certainly existed) as it is incomplete. Chances are good the Van Buren's partisans would never have named their club "O.K." had the phrase not already been widely known as an abbreviation of "oll korrect," a humorous misspelling of "all correct." American speech in the early 1800s was awash in similar abbreviations, two of which, "N.G." ("no good") and "P.D.Q." ("Pretty Damn Quick"), are still heard today.

Ironically, while "O.K." didn't save Van Buren's campaign, the campaign gave "O.K." a new lease on life -- until then, it had never been as popular as a competing phrase, "O.W." (for "oll wright"). (By the way, before we start feeling too superior to the cornball 1800s, is "oll wright" really any worse than the "excuuuse me!" or "not!" fads of a few years ago?).

OK is without doubt the best-known and widest-travelled Americanism, used and recognised even by people who hardly know another word of English. Running in parallel with its popularity have been many attempts to explain where it came from — amateur etymologists have been obsessed with OK and theories have bred unchecked for the past 150 years.

Suggestions abound of introductions from another language, including the one you mention. Others include: from the Choctaw-Chickasaw okah meaning “it is indeed”; from a mishearing of the Scots och aye! (or perhaps Ulster Scots Ough aye!), “yes, indeed!”; from West African languages like Mandingo (O ke, “certainly”) or Wolof (waw kay, “yes indeed”); from Finnish oikea, “correct, exact”; from French au quais, “at the quay” (supposedly stencilled on Puerto Rican rum specially selected for export, or a place of assignation for French sailors in the Caribbean); or from French Aux Cayes (a port in Haiti famous for its superior rum). Such accidentally coincidental forms across languages are surprisingly common and all of these are certainly false. Many African-Americans would be delighted to have it proved that OK is actually from an African language brought to America by slaves, but the evidence is against them, as we shall shortly learn.

It's very interesting I tell ya!!

Happy Blog-a-versary , errmmmm how ever you say it..

Technically, it was sometime this week...but I am a lil slow at updating lately (ha...ever!). But anywho...(my lil cat is sleeping beside me as I typee...awww) yeah, like I said I am freakin' lazy.

My classes this week is like...ughhh. They last till 5, and then traffic. The traffic is really bad where I am. At least when it is peak hour, but then again, where isn't?? Probably somewhere where people don't exceed 100, 000. Maybe in Africa. So I usually stay till closer to 6 o'clock before I make my way back home. Yeah, no traffic but late arrival. I gotta sacrifice something right??

So since this week was my blog first anniversary...I didn't have anything special planned. I mean, I kinda forgot about it till late Thursday. Yep my mom's birthday. Honestly I totally forgot about that too. How bad am I? Mummy I am sorry for forgetting your birthday...but we did make up for it right?? Mom I will get you something you really like! :) Shopping is always a good theraphy...(and will regret when you see the money in your account is getting smaller). Then Friday was my dad's birthday. :) Amazing isn't it?? Their birthdays are just a mere day apart. I suppose it is less than 24 hours. I use to envy them so much but not anymore :D.

Then on the 11th was our 2-months-to-almost-a-year-anniversary. :) Altho I am pretty bum CLK isn't here to celebrate it with me I am shocked how fast a year goes by. It was this time last year, I kept thinking about what would happen to us, except there wasn't an US last year. It was just you and me. Me and you. Me and him. We have gone a long way from being me and you to us. And I am proud of us. :) Us is just a strong word for being just two letters. We have made milestone in the past 10 months, and I can't believe it has been 10 months!! I'm deliriously happy (in the inside) cause I don't have anyone to share my happiness with. And I bet this new year is gonna suck. :( I am hoping next year new year we will spend it together, fingers crossed!

So this week is all about anniversaries and birthdays...and I almost missed it all!! But I didn't :) I am happy to share that I made it happy this week (even tho I had to go to class all day Saturday =_='''). I do have pictures, but they are on my lappie...not here so I will post them maybe tomorrow (hopefully I remember). I hope everyone is having a great weekend. I am off to play Mafia Wars and Farmville on Facebook!!!! :P

Piece of the week: Greatest Hits

I have been away for awhile..actually just here but so busy. Doing this and that (read: not finishing what I have started) but anyway that's typical of me. Ahaha...such a bad habit. Ultimately I have been missing from my Saturday night practices (but come on, it's a Saturday night, I want to go out and do nothing) so I am kinda worried I may not get picked for November/December concert/show/performance. But heck with it. :) I will go to the rehearsal cause I have to love to play my instrument. :D Am a happy camper.

This week I want to share this lovely piece. I love me some Tchaikovsky :D and we have played this piece several times before. And I love it. Short, simple and sweet. Hope you enjoy it, Tchaikovsky's Greatest Hits. **Pssst, fyi my birthday present has not arrived yet, I know....so I am asking for a bigger present :P
